Reliable magnet replacement and more compact stepper motors.
Reliable magnet replacement and more compact stepper motors.
Description
Supplier Nidec (distributed by Dynetics) announced several impressive successes for its hybrid stepper motors, including a reliable magnet replacement and the realization of a more compact size.
China has introduced export restrictions on neodymium magnets and related rare earth elements, requiring a mandatory government license for export since April 2025. This measure will cause significant disruptions to the global supply chain, leading to longer delivery times, potential shortages of high-power magnets, and higher costs worldwide. In addition, shipments containing certain heavy rare earths require a mandatory, individual approval process, which can further extend delivery times.
To mitigate the consequences of the risks of these export restrictions, the supplier is prompting Nidec to implement robust compliance solutions for its products.
Supplier Nidec reported that it completed its tests on the stepper motors with a new neodymium magnet that does not contain dysprosium (Dy) and gadolinium (Gd) and concluded that this new material did not show any significant change in performance compared to the traditional stepper motors. This success allows the supplier to expand the list of permitted uses, making the supplier less dependent on available sources and avoiding the impact of Chinese export regulations on magnets,
Thanks to the optimized design of the rotor, the manufacturer Nidec has succeeded in realizing a more compact size of the motor. Compared to comparable stepper motors in industry, the stepper motors of the KV42 and KF42 enable significantly higher performance in a more compact package. Instead of the previous length of 48 mm, these motors have a length of only 42 mm. The motors with the previous length of 42mm will be reduced to 39mm, etc. The KF42 even achieves a higher torque.
Other benefits include higher limiting torque, more holding torque, high speed, minimal noise, precision windings, high rigidity, and improved motor dynamics. According to the manufacturer, this means that the engines of the KV42 and KF42 series have the highest power density in their class. The motors are manufactured in versions with plugs or free cable ends. Customizations are possible at the customer's request.
