SD2 Drive Controller

SD2 Drive Controller

Description

The drive controller SD2 is designed to control synchronous and asynchronous motors with or without a sensor and permits quick and easy adaptation to the individual case of application – whether used with linear motors, rotary motors or motor-driven machining spindles. This universal drive solution allows the realization of high-speed applications with asynchronous motors up to 180,000 rpm (3,000 Hz) and synchronous motors up to 120,000 rpm (2,000 Hz). Universal motor encoder interfaces and different connection possibilities to a higher-ranking control enable easy adaptation to changing system requirements – nothing will interfere with the optimal implementation of multi-axis applications.

Furthermore, SIEB & MEYER provides users of the SD2 drives with two safety functions especially developed for rotary motors without speed sensors. TÜV Nord has approved the functions Safe Frequency Monitor (SFM) and Safe Limited Output Frequency (SLOF) according to EN 61508:2010. Both functions meet the requirements of safety integrity level SIL3. By means of the safety function SFM the operator can safely detect whether or not the speed of a sensorless spindle has dropped below a safe speed value after switch-off (e.g. to safely unlock the machine door). The safety function SLOF on the other hand is used to make sure that critical speeds are not exceeded (e.g. for setup operation or as burst protection of the tool). The required hardware and software are integrated in the drives of series SD2. Both functions are based on the function Safe Torque Off (STO) that is integrated in all SD2 drives as standard. The outcome is a cost-effective solution for the machine manufacturer.

SD4S Drive Controller

The drive controller SD4S by SIEB & MEYER is optimized for control cabinet installation and used, for example, in machine tools or turbo compressors. The available versions of SD4S are designed for motors or spindles in the power range from a few hundred watts to 6 kilowatts. Variants with an output power of up to 48 kW will follow.

The currently smallest device variants with output powers of 300 W @ 50 VAC or 800 W @ 230 VAC come with an overall width of only 40 mm. The device with an output power of 14 kW comes with an overall width of only 115 mm.

Applications for the existing variants are, for example, dental milling machines, machines for superfinishing, as required in the watch industry, wafer dicing machines in semiconductor manufacturing or the operation of nut running spindles.

On the control side, the SD4S enables the operation of sensorless asynchronous, synchronous and IPM motors up to a rotating field frequency of 4,000 Hz (240,000 rpm), which is a unique feature in the market and allows customers to create new system designs.

Since the insulation strength in motors or spindles of smaller power is often insufficient, the SD4S offers a galvanic separation of the thermal contact.

Furthermore, the SD4S has configurable digital measuring system interfaces such as Biss-C, EnDat 2.2, TTL and Hall. With a web server, technicians can access device information without additional parameterization software. The integrated real-time clock allows an exact analysis of error cases as well as interactions with external events or processes.

Parameterization is done via a standard Ethernet interface, replacing the USB interface, which is susceptible to faults in industrial environments. The Windows software drivemaster4 is the key tool for parameterization, commissioning and simulation of the SD4x series.

In drivemaster4, SIEB & MEYER has further developed the tool "Motor Analyzer" already known from drivemaster2. The tool enables meaningful simulations of the frequency converter operation. This allows for an FFT analysis of the simulated output current. With the figures of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of the motor current (THDi) and the motor voltage (THDu), the user is able to estimate the operating behavior and the motor heating more precisely.

Frequency Converter SD2M with Multi-Level-Technology

A total of six different versions of the frequency converter SD2M are available, ranging from 75 HP to 500 HP or 165 A to 800 A rated current. The devices are very compact, which is an important requirement in the field of high-speed turbo machinery. Beside water-cooled variants, air-cooled devices are also available on request. All devices are NRTL/CSA certified for the North American market.

The SD2M Turbo versions offer another special highlight for use in turbo blowers and turbo compressors: optionally, active magnetic bearings can be supplied with the required DC voltage via clamp connections – this voltage is maintained for braking even in the event of malfunctions.

The innovative three-level technology of the frequency converter SD2M and switching frequencies of up to 16 kHz ensure an excellent current quality, which reduces motor losses and increases overall efficiency. This prevents excessive rotor heating and reduces the load on the bearings as well as insulation stress. Thanks to the frequency converter, customers can do without expensive motor chokes or sine-wave filters.

SD2M will be updated to SD4M in the course of 2025. Since the power output stage of SD2M is already of the most recent design, the update will only affect the logic board. The main benefits for the customer will be improved control technology as well as the Ethernet-based bus systems and the positioning capability.

SD4M Multilevel Frequency Converter

A combination of proven technology with the latest control and communication technology. The device variants of multilevel converter SD4M in the range from 70 kW to 490 kW or 120 A to 800 A rated current correspond to their SD2M counterparts in terms of power electronics. The devices are all very compact, which is an important requirement in the field of high-speed turbo machinery.

In addition to high-speed turbomachinery, the SD4M is very well suited to high-performance routing machines for HSC, as they are frequently used in the aerospace industry, for example. The multiprotocol real-time Ethernet interface available on the device (including PROFINET IO, EtherCAT) enables hassle-free implementation of the SD4M in the higher-ranking control. An optimal operation with an external regenerative power supply is possible using the variants with DC supply.

The SD4M with the new power class (70 kW, 120 A) extends the current power range of SD2S and SD4S and thus closes the performance gap in the frequency converter portfolio.

In addition to the water-cooled variants, air-cooled devices are available on request. NRTL/CSA certification is applied for all devices, which is relevant for customers exporting machines to North America.

The SD4M Turbo versions offer another special highlight for use in turbo blowers and turbo compressors: optionally, active magnetic bearings can be supplied with the required DC voltage via clamp connections – this voltage is maintained for braking even in the event of malfunctions. Another highlight is the new dynamic control of IPM motors, which offers customers further degrees of freedom when it comes to the system conception.

The innovative three-level technology of the frequency converter SD4M in combination with device-dependent switching frequencies of up to 32 kHz ensure an excellent current quality, which reduces motor losses and increases the overall efficiency. This prevents excessive rotor heating and reduces the load on the bearings as well as insulation stress. Thanks to the frequency converter, customers can do without expensive motor chokes or sine-wave filters.
