The open source BiSS (bidirectional/serial/synchronous) protocol implements a fast real-time interface. BiSS enables a digital, serial and secure communication between controller, sensor and actuator. The BiSS protocol is used on the lower sensor/actuator communication level in industrial applications which require fast transfer rates, safety, flexibility and a minimized implementation effort.In addition to its technical advantages, two conditions have established the current global standard: the free BiSS license for applications and the stability and continuity of the protocol since its introduction.BiSS follows the industrial trend of a fully digital communication and increasing functional capabilities with its protocol-specific features like bus structure capabilities and the cyclic redundancy check (CRC) for all transmissions.BiSS with a point-to-point setup is hardware compatible to the industrial standard SSI (Serial Synchronous Interface). BiSS Safety follows the industrial trend of a fully digital communication and functional safety capabilities. Safety critical applications targeting up to SIL3 are covered by the BiSS Safety profile definition of the BiSS C Interface. BiSS Safety uses the BiSS protocol-specific features of the BiSS bus structure and the cyclic redundancy check (CRC ) for a safe "Black Channel" transmission.The BiSS Safety system can be implemented in different ways, e.g.: at the encoder side two independent position words are generated by one or two sensors (BiSS slaves). The drive (BiSS master) can either be a safety drive with the whole safety functionality integrated or a standard drive with an additional BiSS safety monitor which supervises the BiSS communication.The profile definition "BiSS Safety" is certified by TÜV Rheinland. It follows in extracts the requirements stated in DIN EN 61784-3:2011 and is suitable for safety applications up to SIL3 according to IEC61508:2010.

BiSS Line follows the industrial trend of a fully digital communication, functional safety capabilities and motor power supply over a single cable. And yet, BiSS Line provides all specific features of the established BiSS C protocol. The data transmission is based on the industrial standard RS-485 and is protected by a forward error correction (FEC) against disturbances coupled from the motor line to the data line. With FEC the possible cycle time for process data of e.g. 128 bit and a cable length of up to 100m is about 62.5 μs.A BiSS Line system is composed of a single master and a single or multiple slaves. The standard BiSS Line Drive consists of a BiSS Line master (BLM), an oscillator and a RS-485 bus transceiver. The standard BiSS Line Device consists of BiSS Line slave (BLS), oscillator, RS-485 bus transceiver, DC/DC converter and a BiSS C slave(s).
