This presentation introduces a system concept for functionally safe 1D distance measurement on critical infrastructure (up to Performance Level d). The system employs secondary radar technology in the ISM band and is resilient to extreme environmental and surrounding influences. The functionality and measurement principle of the secondary radar will be explained.
Using various application examples, concepts for achieving functionally safe distance measurement are discussed, leveraging both sensor-physical properties and the measurement principle. Typical use cases include positioning and collision protection for cranes in steel plants.
