The safety of machinery and plants depends on the correct application of standards and directives. In Europe, the basis for this is the Machinery Directive, which must be taken into account when designing machinery and placing it on the market within the EU. However, European legislation and standards are also gaining importance outside the European Economic Area due to their international status. The new Machinery Regulation has been in force since July 2023 and will apply from January 2027. In this context, the standards on "functional safety" also play an important role. The requirements for machine controls are specified in both EN ISO 13849 and IEC 62061. Both standards have been extensively revised.
