SPE and IO-Link: JUMO as a Solution Provider with the Best of Both Worlds for the Customer
As a reliable partner on the path to digital transformation JUMO is increasingly positioning itself as a system and solution provider for sensor technology and automation – with smart sensor technology and high-performance automation systems that can be operated intuitively.
"Depending on the industry and industrial application, JUMO offers efficient products and solutions at the most diverse levels of the automation pyramid," emphasizes Christoph Trott, Head of Product Management at JUMO. A sensor connection is possible both on the basis of IO-Link and via Single Pair Ethernet (SPE).
"IO-Link is established as an industrially suitable communication system which has proven simplicity and robustness in operation time and time again," states Trott. He cites the ease of replacing failed or damaged IO-Link sensors as 2 key benefits of IO-Link. This can reduce both downtimes and maintenance costs. Fieldbus independence is ensured by using an IO-Link master with multi-protocol capability.
"By offering new solutions from both technology areas, we are demonstrating that we do not see SPE as a competitor to IO-Link, but rather as a useful addition," says Trott.
Continuous communication down to the field level
SPE is currently gaining importance and proving its suitability for use in industrial applications. JUMO has therefore integrated the innovative SPE technology based on 10BASE-T1L into 3 new sensor solutions:
- JUMO hydroTRANS S20 (temperature, humidity, CO2 transmitter)
- JUMO flowTRANS MAG H20 (flow transmitter)
- JUMO DELOS S02 (pressure transmitter)
Single Pair Ethernet makes complex installations a thing of the past. After all, the new SPE sensors enable Ethernet networking down to the field level, thereby initiating effective communication in all stages of the automation pyramid – right up to direct connection to the JUMO Cloud. Trott sees end-to-end communication without media discontinuity as a key advantage of SPE.
Single Pair Ethernet decreases the cabling effort by reducing it to only one wire pair. This wire pair is used as the energy supply of the sensors using Power over Data Line (PoDL) and a fast digital transmission of the precise sensor values over cable distances of up to 1000 meters.
"We want to give our customers a decision-making basis for their individual application, to show them the best of both worlds," Trott adds.

New Electromagnetic Flowmeter for Conductive Liquids
The JUMO flowTRANS MAG H20 measures conductive media with high precision − even drop-by-drop.
It can be used with flexibility in a wide range of processes. In addition to the flow measurement, the temperature is also measured. A modern HMI allows configuration via Bluetooth and the JUMO smartCONNECT app. The SPE (Single Pair Ethernet) interface with PoDL (Modbus TCP, JUMO Cloud connector) enables simplified JUMO Cloud connection and consistent IP communication from the field to the automation level.
Flow is one of the standard measurands in many different industries. As a result, many processes can be implemented depending on the applied measurement medium, the required accuracy, and the process conditions. JUMO already offers products for flow measurement that operate via differential pressure, the calorimetric measurement method, or the magnetic-inductive measuring principle. The new device uses the magnetic-inductive measuring principle and stands out with its high degree of accuracy.
Its accuracy is +/- 0.5 % of the measured value. An additional temperature sensor is already integrated. Due to such factors as its metal case and a Tri-Clamp process connection in nominal widths from DN 06 to DN 25, it can be used especially well in food-related areas along with other industries for which a G external thread is available. The nominal pressures can be up to PN 16 and the medium temperature up to 90 °C so that it can also be cleaned using CIP. Its IP65 / IP67 protection type makes the device a flexible partner for a wide variety of processes.
The HMI of the device consists of a TFT display on which 2 process values including the status and info messages are displayed. This device is configured locally via the Bluetooth interface and the JUMO smartCONNECT app. The SPE with PoDL interface uses the Modbus TCP protocol, which enables a continuous IP communication from the sensor to the automation system. An integrated JUMO Cloud connector simplifies the connection to the JUMO Cloud. Another variant is available with an IO-Link interface, which, as with the JUMO flowTRANS US W02, also allows other inputs and outputs.
The application possibilities are diverse: The JUMO flowTRANS MAG H20 can be used, for example, in the food industry and in auxiliary circuits in other industries. This way, the application area ranges from small and medium-sized dosing stations to ancillary facilities and pump construction.

JUMO meroVIEW: The "All-Rounder" for Complex Applications
The new JUMO meroVIEW digital indicator series displays a wide range of process variables in a precise and vibrant manner at the on-site location.
The flexible adaptation, the customizable device menu, the text-supported operation, the parameterization, and the configuration in 4 languages as well as the quick wiring in PUSH-IN terminal technology make a fast startup and versatile use in different industries possible. "This saves the customer time and money," says product manager Klaus Otto.
The new series is available with a five-digit display in the 96 × 48 mm landscape format that is typical of display devices as well as in formats 48 × 48 mm, 48 × 96 mm, and 96 × 96 mm.
Up to 5 universal measuring inputs allow the connection of RTD temperature probes, thermocouples, resistance transmitters, resistance potentiometers, and standard signals 0(4) to 20 mA/0(2) to 10 V. Customer-specific linearization with 40 value pairs or a mathematical 4th order polynomial allow individual adaptation to a wide range of sensor signals. Thanks to fast pulse inputs, machine speeds or totalized flow rates (or counting pulses) can also be acquired and displayed.
The modular device concept offers flexible expansion with a wide variance of options. These include digital and analog inputs, outputs, and interfaces as well as a voltage supply for two-wire transmitters.
A high degree of connectivity is achieved through the available interfaces, RS485 (Modbus RTU master/slave), Ethernet (Modbus TCP master/slave), and PROFINET device as well as USB host and USB device.
In addition to standard functions such as min/max value, measured value hold, or a tare function for weighing applications, math and logic functions can be used to link analog or digital values, or to implement additional control functions via ST code (structured text).
The setup program provides an ST editor and a debug function for ST code programming.

Reliable and Fast Process Visualization at a Glance
Smart solution JUMO variTRON 500 touch can be used in many industries.
JUMO variTRON 500 touch provides users with a smart solution for simple automation applications. It can be used in a wide range of industries.
These include plant engineering, mechanical engineering, measurement, control, automation, industrial furnace construction, food industry, pharmaceutical/medical/biotechnology, energy and water supply, as well as water and environmental engineering.
It is the first JUMO device with a capacitive touchscreen. The central processing unit and display are built into one device. JUMO now provides an entire PLC family. The product is available in 7" and 10.1" as well as with IP65 and IP69K (excellent robustness) protection type.
"We work with market standards like CODESYS V3.5 and Node-RED as development environments," explains product manager Michael Wiener. CODESYS is the central element of the PLC.
The JUMO variTRON 500 touch enables clear process and plant visualizations as well as user interfaces. Full connectivity to systems and components is provided due to support for numerous fieldbus systems (such as PROFINET IO controller and EtherCAT master) as well as modern communication protocols like OPC UA. The JUMO variTRON 500 touch is an example of reliable control technology with independent PID controllers, including autotuning function.
JUMO variTRON 500 is based on a powerful CPU with an 800 MHz quad-core processor. The software has a modular structure based on a Linux platform and uses the CODESYS V3.5 programming environment SP17 to create PLC programs. Another special feature is a customer-specific configuration and process data editor. In addition, individual applications can be created using the modern programming environment Node-RED.
The central processing unit has 2 USB host ports, 3 Ethernet interfaces, and 1 RS485 port as connection options. Up to 32 wireless JUMO Wtrans sensors can be connected via a wireless gateway for various purposes including measuring temperature or pressure.
The intuitive evaluation and visualization of up to 240 logged process data units from the JUMO variTRON 500 touch automation system is possible with the browser-based software solution JUMO smartWARE Evaluation. Individual dashboards allow targeted and fast access to recorded process data. Manipulation detection based on digital certificates ensures a high degree of data security.
