NORDAC ON: New decentralised inverter with flexible Ethernet interface
A future-proof plug-and-play solution for lower power ranges
NORD DRIVESYSTEMS is further expanding its extensive modular product range of decentralised drive electronics. NORDAC ON was specially developed to meet the special requirements of horizontal conveyor technology in the field of warehousing, as well as for the interaction with the new IE5+ synchronous motor, and is characterised by an integrated Ethernet interface, full pluggability and a very compact design. An economic plug-and-play solution for IIoT environments
The NORDAC ON is a compact and smart inverter for decentralised use. It is directly mounted on the drive housing and covers lower power ranges of up to 1.0 kW. The plans in place include two versions with three sizes each: NORDAC ON was designed for use with asynchronous motors, whereas NORDAC ON+ is intended for combination with synchronous motors and supplements the NORD high-efficiency portfolio around the new IE5+ motor generation. Both inverter versions have an integrated Ethernet interface and thus are ideally equipped for integration into modern automation systems. Whether for ProfiNet, EtherNet/IP or EtherCAT – the required protocol can be easily set via parameters.
High functionality and economic efficiency
The new inverter was specially matched to the target applications of horizontal conveyor technology. The standardisation covers all industry-specific requirements and ensures high economic efficiency. All connections are pluggable and ensure a quick, easy and error-minimising commissioning and maintenance on site. The equipment comprises a diagnostic interface, four digital inputs and, with the NORDAC ON+, an additional protocol-based and thus more reliable encoder interface. nsd tupH surface treatment, functional safety (STO) and internal braking resistors for dynamic start/stop processes are optionally available. In case the inverter should or could not be mounted on the motor, it can alternatively be mounted on the wall to connect the converter close to the drive.
Digitalisation
As with all NORD frequency inverters, the new member of the NORDAC family is equipped with a powerful PLC for functions close to the drive. It can process the data from connected sensors and actuators, autonomously initiate control sequences and communicate drive and application data to the control centre, networked components or to cloud storage. This allows continuous condition monitoring and therefore forms the basis for predictive maintenance concepts as well as optimum plant dimensioning.
Future-proof
Intelligent, user-friendly and economically efficient With NORDAC ON and NORDAC ON+, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS provides future-proof solutions for lower power ranges and emphasises its leading position in the field of decentralised drive electronics. The new inverter is expected to be available as serial product in the fourth quarter of 2021 and will be initially launched in two sizes.

TWO BECOME ONE - Gear unit and motor in one: the new DuoDrive
With the IE5+ synchronous motor, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS is setting new standards with regard to energy efficiency of drive systems in the food industry and intralogistics. NORD has now integrated this high-efficiency IE5+ motor in a single-stage helical gear unit and thus optimised system efficiency. Compact installation space, high power density and very low noise emissions are only some advantages for users in the intralogistics sector or in food and pharmaceutical industries.
The new DuoDrive gear unit/motor combination features high system efficiency and a consistent version reduction paired with a smooth, unventilated and compact design. Elimination of various wearing parts results in lower maintenance. In combination with the simple commissioning of the complete solution via plug-and-play, this results in a significant decrease of the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) compared to existing drive systems. DuoDrive is suitable for use in food and pharmaceutical industries as well as in intralogistics.
Consistently taking integration to the next level
DuoDrive is a NORD DRIVESYSTEMS’ revolutionary integrated gear unit/motor concept in hygienic wash-down design where the IE5+ synchronous motor and the single-stage helical gear unit are installed in one single housing. As a system, the very compact DuoDrive concept achieves a significantly higher energy efficiency than the already proven LogiDrive concept where the IE5+ synchronous motor is combined with the NORDBLOC.1® bevel gear unit. With up to 92%, DuoDrive currently offers the highest efficiency of a gear unit/motor combination in this power class on the market, and achieves very high systems efficiency in the partial load range. It is thus future-proof and a real cost reducer. The first available DuoDrive size covers gear unit speed ratios of i = 3.24 to i = 16.2 and is designed for torque ranges of up to 80 Nm and speeds of up to 1,000 min-1.
Full compatibility with market standards
Like all products from the NORD portfolio, DuoDrive is compatible with the NORD drive electronics and can be equipped with all common hollow shaft dimensions (20 to 40 mm) and flange versions (B5 and B14), or a torque arm. Depending on the customer requirements, Harting HAN connectors, M12 round plug connectors or direct wiring are provided for the motor connection. Different options like encoder feedback or a holding brake are also possible with DuoDrive. As it is easy to clean, corrosion resistant and wash-down capable, DuoDrive is also ideal for use in hygiene-sensitive and harsh environments, and ensures higher system availability and lower cleaning costs through lower cleaning effort.

Saving energy with the NORD ECO service
70 percent! That is the share of the total energy consumption of all industries for electric drives according to expert estimates. This is not only a significant cost factor – there is also a large optimisation and savings potential hidden here. The NORD ECO service helps companies to reveal this potential and to find the most efficient drive solution for their application.
“The first step is the comprehensive collection of measurement values”, Jörg Niermann, Head of Marketing at NORD, explains. For this purpose, the so-called NORD ECO BOX, a mobile inverter cabinet, is connected between the motor and the power supply. The NORD ECO BOX consists of an energy measuring device with data logger function, current transformer and cable connections.
Over a period of about two weeks, the box records data in real time about permanent loads, load peaks and irregular conditions. Once the survey is completed, the results are uploaded to software developed by NORD that automatically evaluates the data.
Identifying overdimensioning and optimising systems
NORD offers the ECO service for systems with both its own and third-party components. “The measurements over time make it possible to create a load cycle for the system. This shows whether a system’s dimensioning corresponds to the requirements of the respective application, Niermann explains. “We often see drive systems that are oversized for the corresponding application.” If a system is driven with the drive recommended by NORD, the company offers to carry out a remeasurement. As part of a TCO analysis (Total Cost of Ownership), the most cost- and energy-efficient solution can then be determined.
Variant reduction for more efficiency
For large systems with several drives, such as in intralogistics, the analysis with the NORD ECO service can significantly reduce the number of different drive systems. This helps to minimise administrative costs and streamlines production, logistics, storage and service processes. NORD offers high-efficiency motors with constant torque over a large speed range, which are ideally suitable for variant reduction.

The decentralised frequency inverter NORDAC ON – now with extended power range
NORD DRIVESYSTEMS specifically developed its decentralised NORDAC ONSK 300P frequency inverters for the requirements of horizontal conveyor technology in intralogistics and warehousing. The inverters are characterised by an integrated Ethernet interface, IIoT capability, full pluggability and a compact design. Now, the power range of the NORDAC ON has been extended to 3 kW.
The NORDAC ON frequency inverters are part of the NORD modular system and can be optimally combined with the manufacturer’s motors.
- NORDAC ON was designed for applications with asynchronous motors,
- NORDAC ON+ was designed for the combination with highly efficient IE5+ synchronous motors.
The drives can be used over a wide speed range and thus allow for variant reduction, for example in large intralogistics systems. The NORDAC ON is now designed for power ranges of up to 2.6 kW – the NORDAC ON+ for up to 3 kW. Both have integrated Industrial Ethernet interfaces. The communication protocols, for example Profinet, EtherNet/IP or EtherCAT, can be easily set via parameters. Firmware updates can also be implemented via Ethernet. This makes the NORDAC ON/ON+ frequency inverters optimally suited for integration into IIoT environments. The equipment also includes a diagnostic interface, M12 connections for sensors and actuators and, with the NORDAC ON+, an additional protocol-based encoder interface that is well protected against interference.
Economical plug-and-play solution
The space-saving decentralised inverters can be perfectly integrated into conveyor systems, significantly reducing wiring efforts compared to centralised frequency inverters. Its pluggable connections make the NORDAC ON/ON+ an economic plug-and-play solution for intralogistics applications. The inverters are suitable for direct motor mounting or for wall mounting.
As with all NORD frequency inverters, the NORDAC ON/ON+ is equipped with a powerful PLC for functions close to the drive. It can process data from connected sensors and actuators, initiate control sequences and communicate drive and application data to the control centre, networked components or to cloud storage.

Drive electronics for each application case
For more than 30 years, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has been developing and producing electronic drive technology and is one of the pioneers in innovative inverter technology. The portfolio includes motor starters and frequency inverters of up to 22 kW in decentralised designs and up to 160 kW for the control cabinet – characterised by scalable functions, high precision regulation, easy installation and operation. Different power classes, mounting options and communication modules ensure integration into all control architectures.
Whether a control cabinet installation or a decentralised version for use in the field – with its NORDAC product family, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS offers electronic drive technology for almost every application. The frequency inverters and motor starters cover a wide power range of up to 160 kW and impress with high performance and safety. A special feature is the large range of modular products for decentralised drive electronics. Whether mounted on the motor or close to the motor: With power ratings up to 22 kW and their large range of functions, NORD decentralised drives are used in many applications worldwide – from the food industry to intralogistics through to bulk goods handling.
Scalable functions for each drive application
All NORD inverters are scalable with regard to function and configuration, and can be flexibly adjusted to any application. They are quick to install, easy to operate and compatible with all common bus systems and controls. Useful features like the PLC functionality for drive-integrated functions, an energy-saving function for partial load operation, the POSICON positioning control, integrated brake choppers for 4-quadrant operation and functional safety with STO and SS1 ensure high functional use. The inverters perform open-loop or closed-loop, and are designed for operation with asynchronous and synchronous motors. The precise current vector control ensures optimal torque in a wide variety of load and speed situations. The consistency of the entire NORDAC product family ensures a comparable function range, uniform operation, and common options for all NORD frequency inverters. Condition monitoring for predictive maintenanceNORD inverters have condition monitoring solutions for predictive maintenance systems and are well equipped for use in IIoT and Industry 4.0. The integrated PLC can process data from connected sensors and actuators, initiate control sequences and communicate with other system components. The periodic or continuous recording of drive and status data allows for an early detection and avoidance of impermissible operating states. Unscheduled downtimes can be significantly reduced and status-oriented maintenance (predictive maintenance) replaces time-based maintenance. Machinery and plant downtimes can be scheduled.
Own electronics production in Aurich
The frequency inverters and motor starters are manufactured in Aurich (East Friesland), Lower Saxony. NORD has been operating its own electronics production in Aurich since 1984, producing more than 100,000 units per year in a manufacturing area of 5,000 m2 – from series production devices via individually configurable components through to one-off special build items. The drive specialist develops all solutions together with customers and perfectly matches them to the individual requirements.
