Wireless communication, especially 5G, is essential for the smart factory and more generally for Industry 4.0 as it enables seamless, ubiquitous and scalable connectivity between machines, people and sensors, as well as with mobile units such as mobile robots, automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and drones . 5G also makes it possible in many cases to reduce or even remove the cables of stationary, rotating and other objects with limited mobility. The General Chair of the 5G Alliance for Connected Industries and Automation (5G-ACIA) provides an insight into where we are on the road to Industrial 5G.
