Layer 2 communication is needed for industrial fieldbuses, but is currently not sufficiently supported in 5G systems. Therefore, a tunnel for Layer 2 communication over 5G is needed, although it should already be supported according to 3GPP specifications from Release 15. The impairments of these Layer 2 tunnel solutions using 5G systems have not yet been sufficiently investigated. We have carried out a performance evaluation using VXLAN as an example and present initial results, new opportunities and findings.
